Samsung Display Supplies Over 70% of OLED Panels for Major Laptop Brands

According to Chinese market research firm Sigmaintell on Oct. 15, Samsung Display supplies more than 70% of the OLED panels used by major laptop brands. As OLED adoption increases, supply has become increasingly concentrated: Lenovo relies primarily on Samsung Display while sourcing some panels from BOE and EverDisplay (EDO); HP also depends heavily on Samsung Display and uses EDO panels in certain models; Asus sources from Samsung Display, BOE and EDO; Acer obtains approximately 75% of its OLED panels from Samsung Display; and Dell sources panels for its XPS lineup from LG Display but relies mainly on Samsung Display for its other products. Laptop OLED panel shipments more than doubled from 2.1 million units in the first quarter of last year to 4.3 million units in the second quarter of this year, and are expected to reach 4.9 million units in the third quarter; OLED's share of the overall laptop panel market is projected to exceed 10% in the second half of this year; and Lenovo, HP and Asus are each expected to equip more than 10% of their laptops with OLED panels this year. Sigmaintell said that greater dependence on a single supplier weakens negotiating position on prices and increases coordination requirements, so major laptop brands are shifting procurement strategies toward securing multiple suppliers. In the entry-level segment, TCL CSOT is preparing to supply inkjet-printed (IJP) OLED panels: it began shipping monitor panels in the third quarter and plans to start mass production of laptop panels in the fourth quarter. In the midrange and high-end segments, BOE and Visionox are expanding supplies of flexible OLED panels, with BOE having begun mass production at its B16 line in the second quarter of this year and Visionox having started producing flexible OLED panels for laptops in the third quarter. Sigmaintell forecasts that amorphous silicon (a-Si) LCDs will account for approximately 48% of laptop panels in 2030, down from about 79% in 2024, while OLED's share is expected to rise to around 20% and oxide LCDs are projected to reach approximately 29%.

BOE's 24-layer glass substrates reach AI chip packaging trials, with mass production still ahead

At an investor relations event on October 15, Chinese display manufacturer BOE said it had completed the full manufacturing process for glass-core substrates, producing 24-layer samples measuring more than 100 × 100mm. The samples have been delivered to customers and passed multiple reliability tests, with further validation underway; mass production remains ahead and has not yet been achieved.

BOE Chairman Chen Yanshun Meets Samsung Electronics CEO TM Roh

BOE Chairman Chen Yanshun visited South Korea on Oct. 12 and met with Samsung Electronics CEO TM Roh. Industry officials believe the two executives discussed supplies of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for TVs and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels for smartphones. LCD supply volumes and pricing are key issues: Samsung Electronics has become increasingly dependent on Chinese panel makers since South Korean manufacturers stopped producing TV LCD panels, and its largest supplier is China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), a subsidiary of TCL. Samsung has reportedly been sharply increasing purchases from BOE this year to reduce its reliance on any single supplier, and negotiations over purchase prices amid fluctuations in LCD panel prices are another issue. The potential resumption of OLED transactions for smartphones is also drawing attention: Samsung Electronics began sourcing some OLED panels for its Galaxy A57 from CSOT this year; BOE previously supplied OLED panels for Samsung's Galaxy A and M series, but shipments stopped amid a patent dispute with Samsung Display, a Samsung Electronics subsidiary, and a settlement reached last November cleared the way for business to resume. The meeting came about four months after Roh visited BOE in China in June; Chen also traveled to South Korea last December to meet Samsung Electronics executives, and senior executives from the two companies have met three times in less than a year. Chen is scheduled to visit BOE Korea's recently relocated office on Oct. 14 before returning to China.

Japan's January PC shipments fall 15.9%, worst in 30 months, snapping 19-month growth streak

Japan's PC shipments fell 15.9% YoY in January 2026, marking the worst decline in 30 months and ending a 19-month growth streak. This indicates a sharp, unexpected contraction in a key end-market for semiconductors. Bearish: Weak PC demand signals potential inventory pressure and reduced orders for core components like CPUs, memory, and displays.
