SIA Applauds GlobalFoundries Expansion Under U.S.-Japan Initiative
What happened
On October 19, 2026, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) applauded GlobalFoundries' expansion under the U.S.-Japan Strategic Investment Initiative. SIA announced that GlobalFoundries has been selected to operate two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Malta, New York, the first semiconductor projects under the U.S.-Japan Strategic Investment Initiative, with the United States and Japan jointly owning the facilities. An initial $10 billion investment will support the construction of a new fab, adding roughly 900,000 300mm wafers of annual U.S. manufacturing capacity when operational. A second investment of roughly $10 billion would support the construction of an additional fab with similar production capabilities. Both fabs will be completely funded by Japan through the U.S.-Japan Strategic Investment Initiative. GlobalFoundries plans to break ground on the first facility later this year.
