GlobalFoundries to operate two Japan-funded fabs in New York

What happened

GlobalFoundries has been selected to operate two new 300mm fabs at its Malta, New York site, financed by Japan through up to USD 21 billion under the US-Japan trade agreement; the first fab is expected to come online in 2029 after ground is broken later in 2026, and each fab will add about 900,000 300mm wafers per year to U.S. capacity once operational. The U.S. government will take an approximate 4% equity stake, and GlobalFoundries will reallocate USD 955 million of its existing CHIPS Act award to silicon photonics, SiGe and advanced packaging in Malta and Burlington, Vermont. Customers including Renesas, Apple, Cirrus Logic, GM and Tokyo Electron have signed on, with Renesas viewing the fabs as an extension of its own production.
