[News] Panasonic Plant Fire Reportedly Puts 4% of Global High-End CCL Supply at Risk; Taiwan Makers Eye Order Shifts
What happened
According to Economic Daily News, a major explosion and fire at Panasonic Industrial Devices Materials Taiwan's (PIDMTW) Hukou plant in Hsinchu on November 4 has raised concerns over supplies of high-end, ultra-low-loss copper-clad laminates (CCLs) used in AI servers, with the disruption potentially affecting roughly 4% of global high-end CCL supply and potentially redirecting orders to Taiwanese CCL makers. Commercial Times, citing supply chain sources, puts Panasonic's MEGTRON series at around 20% of the global high-end CCL market, with the Hukou facility accounting for 20% of the series' worldwide capacity—equivalent to roughly 4% of global supply. Economic Daily News says the plant is a key production hub for Panasonic's advanced MEGTRON series, including ultra-low-loss materials such as M6, M7 and M8; Commercial Times notes the Hukou plant primarily manufactures M6-grade materials, with M8 materials possibly still in trial production and capacity ramp-up yet to begin. Analysts cited by Economic Daily News say stringent cleanroom and equipment precision requirements could make recovery lengthy, with equipment replacement and customer requalification potentially delaying production for several months or longer. The report notes that with NVIDIA and the four major U.S. cloud service providers ramping up orders amid already stretched CCL lead times, the damage could further tighten supplies of ultra-low-loss materials and create opportunities for Taiwanese CCL suppliers including Elite Material (EMC), Taiwan Union Technology (TUC), ITEQ and Ventec. The report also notes that in a March press release, Panasonic announced plans to invest approximately 7.5 billion yen in its Guangzhou factory to add a production line for MEGTRON multi-layer circuit board materials, planned to commence initial manufacturing operations in April 2027, with mass production scheduled for later in the fiscal year.
