Sunic System Forecast to Lead Global Display Equipment Revenue in 2027

What happened

According to market researcher Counterpoint Research on Nov. 4, Sunic System is projected to lead the global display equipment market by revenue in 2027, which would mark the first time a South Korean equipment supplier has topped the global market. Counterpoint attributed Sunic System's growing market presence to the acceleration of Gen 8 OLED investment for IT applications. Sunic System secured the entire order for fine metal mask (FMM) deposition equipment at Chinese display maker BOE's Gen 8.6 IT OLED plant, B16, which produces OLED panels for laptops and tablets, and is scheduled to begin supplying deposition equipment for the second phase of B16 this month. OLEDoS equipment is another revenue driver: Sunic System won OLEDoS deposition equipment orders from three Chinese customers in the first half of this year, signing a 41 billion won contract with Jinan Goerpixel Technology in January and a 20.6 billion won contract with Anhui Hongxi Weixian Technology in February, subsequently securing an additional order from SeeYA, and last month signing another supply agreement with an existing overseas customer. Counterpoint expects Samsung Display to pursue investment in RGB OLEDoS technology based on 12-inch wafers and sees Sunic System as a strong candidate to supply deposition equipment for the project. Counterpoint forecast that global display equipment investment would rise 61% from a year earlier to $10.8 billion in 2026, driven by Gen 8 IT OLED projects including BOE's B16, Visionox's V5 and CSOT's T8; it also projected that investment in display equipment would fall 49% next year as large-scale projects such as the second phase of B16 decline, with rising memory prices weighing on investment — DRAM prices in the third quarter of this year climbed to about 3.5 times their year-earlier level, increasing cost pressures on smartphone makers, with some North American products already seeing price increases of at least $100, while Samsung Display and LG Display are delaying or scaling back planned investments in new sixth-generation smartphone display technologies. Jayden Lee, associate director at Counterpoint Research, said expectations for a rebound in the display industry have increased as Gen 8 IT OLED production investment gains momentum, and Samsung Display plans to mass-produce OLED panels for Apple's MacBook Pro at its Gen 8 IT OLED fab, with the product scheduled for launch by the end of this year.
