AMD Posts Record Third-Quarter Results, Forecasts Stronger Fourth Quarter
What happened
On Nov. 3 local time, AMD reported record third-quarter results: revenue of $13.377 billion, up 45% from a year earlier, and GAAP operating income of $2.832 billion, up 123% year over year, both quarterly records; non-GAAP EPS rose 74% from a year earlier to $2.09, beating analysts' estimates compiled by LSEG of $13.09 billion in revenue and $1.95 in non-GAAP EPS. The data center business led growth with third-quarter revenue of $8.546 billion, nearly doubling from a year earlier, driven by demand for AMD EPYC server CPUs and the launch of the AMD Instinct MI450-series GPUs; the segment's share of total revenue rose to 64% from 47% a year earlier. AMD forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $17 billion, plus or minus 3%, a 66% increase from a year earlier, with a non-GAAP gross margin of approximately 55%; the outlook is based on increased fourth-quarter production of Helios, its next-generation rack-scale AI computing platform, and Venice, its sixth-generation EPYC processor. CFO Jean Hu said the outlook reflects expectations for accelerating revenue and earnings growth driven by strong demand across the data center product portfolio, and CEO Lisa Su said she was confident AMD could sustain very strong revenue growth and expand profitability over the next several years. AMD shares rose 3.65% during regular trading, and as of 7 a.m. the stock was up 7.25% in after-hours trading at $518.77. By contrast, Intel, which reported third-quarter results on Oct. 29, posted revenue of $16.513 billion and GAAP operating income of $2.522 billion, up 21% and 269% respectively from a year earlier, but its fourth-quarter forecast fell short of market expectations, sending its shares down more than 20% in after-hours trading.
