Samsung SDS Begins Construction of Gumi AI Data Center, Plans Expansion to 120MW

What happened

Samsung SDS announced on Nov. 2 that it will build a dedicated AI data center on a 46,280-square-meter site in Gongdan-dong, Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, initially with a power capacity of 60MW and with plans to expand it in phases to a maximum of 120MW depending on future demand for AI infrastructure. The facility received construction approval from the Gumi municipal government in late August 2026, with completion targeted for the end of 2028 and operations scheduled to begin in March 2029. The project is on the site of Samsung Electronics' former Gumi Plant 1, purchased by Samsung SDS in December 2024; on Jan. 2, 2026, Samsung SDS's board approved an investment of 427.3 billion won for construction of the data center building and installation of certain facilities, excluding additional AI computing equipment such as GPU servers, meaning total investment could increase as the project expands. Later that month, the company signed an MOU with North Gyeongsang Province and Gumi City at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. The facility will use hybrid cooling combining air and liquid cooling, and Samsung SDS plans to offer GPU computing services using servers it installs and operates directly, alongside colocation services for external customers' own GPU equipment. Background: Samsung announced a roughly 60 trillion won investment plan for the Yeongnam region on July 3, 2026; on its Oct. 29 third-quarter earnings call, Samsung SDS outlined plans to expand AI infrastructure capacity to more than 800MW by 2031; its third-quarter cloud business revenue reached 796.1 billion won, up 18% from a year earlier.
