Intel, SAP Partner to Connect Enterprise Systems With Robots Through Physical AI
What happened
Intel and SAP announced a partnership in physical artificial intelligence (AI) technology at SAP TechEd 2026 on Oct. 29. The companies unveiled a proof of concept for a physical AI-powered autonomous warehouse, integrating SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM), a warehouse logistics management system, with Intel's edge AI hardware and software. When task context and processing rules are entered into SAP EWM, the information is transmitted to autonomous robots powered by Intel semiconductors, which execute tasks and report progress and completion results to the enterprise system in real time. Intel's edge AI hardware incorporates heterogeneous semiconductor technologies combining CPUs, GPUs and NPUs, supporting local perception, inference, navigation, inspection and real-time control for industrial robots; the software uses Intel's OpenVINO Physical AI, Physical AI Studio and Robotics AI Suite, supporting robots from multiple manufacturers, operating systems and AI models. Demonstrations showed shorter travel distances and significantly less repetitive manual work compared with standalone robotic automation. The two companies plan to develop the PoC into a standardized blueprint to scale intelligent automation across different facilities and robot models; this plan has not yet been implemented.
