Akamai Expands Cloud Services With AI Inference and Agent Execution Tools

What happened

On Oct. 29, Akamai Technologies announced the launch of beta versions of Akamai Inference and Akamai Agent Sandbox, expanding into AI model operations and agent execution. Akamai Inference allows enterprises to deploy AI models and integrate them into production environments, with a choice between a serverless model that charges based on usage and a dedicated deployment option; the service supports 12 open-weight models, including OpenAI's gpt-oss-120b, Google's Gemma 4 and Nvidia's Nemotron 3 Ultra, supports embedding models used in retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and provides an OpenAI-compatible API. Akamai Agent Sandbox enables code generated by AI agents to run in isolated environments using WebAssembly-based isolation technology, restricting access to computing resources, network connections and system functions; the company also plans to add capabilities to control agent access permissions. Akamai said its network of more than 4,350 edge locations worldwide allows AI services to be processed closer to users, reducing latency. Adam Karon, COO and general manager of Akamai Cloud, said the two products are designed to add inference and execution layers to the company's existing AI infrastructure. Beyond the stated aim of supporting AI application development, execution and security, the source does not state the cause; this is a product/service expansion and has no direct link to semiconductor component prices.
