LG Display’s Q3 Operating Profit Falls 42% on Year
What happened
LG Display said on Oct. 22 that it recorded third-quarter revenue of 6.277 trillion won and operating profit of 250.6 billion won, with revenue and operating profit declining 10% and 42%, respectively, from a year earlier. Compared with the previous quarter, revenue increased 12% and the company swung to an operating profit from a loss of 107.7 billion won. Although shipments of large-sized and mobile OLED products increased as demand entered its seasonal peak, returning the company to profitability, a weaker dollar against the won and rising semiconductor prices, known as chipflation, limited margin improvement. Revenue declined year-on-year as shipments of medium-sized liquid crystal displays (LCDs) fell amid the company's focus on a profitability-oriented product portfolio. Third-quarter EBITDA totaled 1.2144 trillion won and net profit reached 755.6 billion won, with net profit reflecting improved foreign currency translation gains and losses from a decline in the exchange rate at the end of the quarter. LG Display plans to strengthen its competitiveness in high-value-added OLED products for mobile and IT devices, as well as OLED panels for premium TVs and gaming monitors, and to pursue technology development including its next-generation OLED patterning technology FLiPP, along with cost innovation.
