ST Expands STM32 Platform to Automotive and Physical AI

What happened

STMicroelectronics (ST) announced at an online briefing for STM32 Summit 2026 on Nov. 3 (local time) that it is integrating its industrial and automotive microcontrollers (MCUs) into a unified technology platform, planning to extend the architecture and development environment of its industrial STM32 MCU family to automotive applications and to use the platform to target the robotics and physical AI markets. ST also unveiled its new STM32A automotive MCU family with three products: the STM32A4 for entry-level control units, the STM32A5 for body and convenience functions, and the STM32A9 for high-performance integrated control. The STM32A4 and STM32A5 are designed to support the ASIL-B functional safety standard, while the higher-end STM32A9 supports ASIL-D. The STM32A9 supports up to 12MB of memory and is designed to consolidate multiple vehicle functions under a single MCU. Samples of some STM32A products are already being supplied to customers, and ST plans to expand supply starting with the STM32A9 in the first half of next year. ST also unveiled new high-performance MCUs: the STM32G5 mixed-signal MCU features an Arm Cortex-M33 core operating at up to 280MHz, with CoreMark computing performance approximately twice that of the previous-generation STM32G4; it targets digital power control in data centers and robotic motor control, and Taiwan-based power supply manufacturer Delta Electronics and Chinese robotics component supplier Ruiyan have adopted the chip. The STM32H7P combines a Cortex-M7 core with an ST-developed neural processing unit (NPU) delivering 85 GOPS; ST said a solar inverter customer participating in early evaluations increased the number of panels managed by a single MCU from four to 20, and mass production is scheduled to begin early next year. ST also introduced STM32Cube for Agentic AI, enabling AI coding agents to access ST's official technical documentation and development tools to write and review code. ST already offers an automotive MCU family called Stellar; management said demand for Stellar is growing in vehicle integration applications such as X-in-one systems and that ST will gradually expand the STM32A family. The platform extension, supply expansion and mass production are stated as plans and have not yet been implemented.
