Greece unveils semiconductor strategy
What happened
Greece's Development Ministry has opened a draft national strategy for semiconductors and microelectronics for public consultation, setting out how the country hopes to build a larger role in chip design, research and specialized manufacturing between 2026 and 2030. Comments from companies, universities, research centers, industry groups and investors are being accepted until November 12, after which a final plan is expected to go to the Government Committee for Industry. Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos said Greece currently has 35 companies working specifically in semiconductors and microchips, employing about 1,200 specialized workers, and the government has provided €3.63 million to the Hellenic Semiconductor Competence Center. A study by the National Technical University of Athens and the Hellenic Emerging Technologies Industry Association counted 76 companies and about 4,600 employees in the wider technology ecosystem. The strategy identifies five areas for action: chip design and intellectual property; closer links between research and production; specialized skills; demand from strategic industries; and investment in infrastructure and critical raw materials. The draft also proposes a National Council for Semiconductors and Microelectronics and a Hellenic Chips Office to coordinate policy, with financing to combine European programs, national resources and private capital. The source states the draft arrives as Europe tries to strengthen secure chip supply chains and reduce strategic dependencies. The draft notes Greece does not have large-scale semiconductor factories, an established foundry network or advanced packaging capacity; the consultation is the first policy stage, and the government must still decide which proposed priorities receive budgets, incentives and implementation deadlines.
