Murata to Invest 1 Trillion Yen in MLCCs Over Five Years

What happened

On Oct. 30, Japan's Murata Manufacturing announced a plan to invest approximately 1 trillion yen in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) over five years from fiscal 2026 to fiscal 2030 (April 2026 to March 2031) to expand production capacity, providing details of the additional capacity investment plan previously outlined by President Norio Nakajima. The plan remains in a planned status and has not been implemented. In Japan, Murata will expand its MLCC production network from two sites to three by adding Okayama Murata Manufacturing — a subsidiary that has produced ceramic raw materials, inductors and communication modules — to the existing Fukui Murata Manufacturing and Izumo Murata Manufacturing, and Okayama will begin manufacturing finished MLCC products. Okayama Murata will invest approximately 150 billion yen in Setouchi, Okayama Prefecture, to build separate production facilities for MLCCs and for ceramic sheets and raw materials; the MLCC facility's construction will begin in April 2027 and be completed by the end of 2028, while the sheets and raw materials facility is scheduled for completion in 2030, with the local production workforce expanding to between 1,500 and 2,000 employees by 2030. Izumo Murata will build a new factory for electronic components including MLCCs in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, with the investment amount and completion date yet to be determined; Fukui Murata completed a ceramic capacitor R&D facility in February. Overseas, Murata's Thai subsidiary will construct a new production building targeted for completion in 2030, and its Philippine manufacturing subsidiary will install production equipment and infrastructure in unused space within an existing building by 2027; Murata will also introduce equipment annually at existing factories in Japan, ASEAN countries and China while increasing the capacity of existing equipment. Of the total investment, approximately 350 billion yen will go to buildings and 650 billion yen to production equipment, and the expansion is expected to more than double MLCC revenue in fiscal 2030 compared with fiscal 2025. In a Bloomberg interview on Oct. 13, Nakajima said the company was considering additional capacity investment and had been forced to turn down some customer orders because of growing demand for MLCCs used in AI servers. On Oct. 30 Murata also reported consolidated first-half fiscal 2026 (April to September) revenue of 1.090764 trillion yen (up 20.8% year on year) and operating profit of 245.907 billion yen (up 48.9% year on year), while revenue from capacitors including MLCCs rose 33.1% to 605.583 billion yen.
