Hyundai Motor Group to Break Ground on Saemangeum AI Data Center in 2027
What happened
On Oct. 30, Hyundai Motor Group said it is moving ahead with its artificial intelligence (AI) data center project in Saemangeum, North Jeolla Province, with five affiliates — Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Hyundai AutoEver — having finalized their decisions to invest in the construction and operation of the AI data center. In November, the group plans to establish two separate entities: a Data Center SPC responsible for construction and infrastructure development, and a GPU Service SPC responsible for securing high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) and providing related services; Hyundai AutoEver confirmed its participation in the GPU Service SPC following board approval. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2027, with operations targeted for early 2030. The project is part of Hyundai Motor Group's 9 trillion won AI Valley investment plan in Saemangeum. In September, the group began establishing an SPC for a 200-megawatt (MW) solar power project and initiated the architectural review process for the AI data center. The group plans to use the data center as core infrastructure for developing physical AI technologies, including autonomous driving, robotics and manufacturing AI: for autonomous driving, the facility will serve as a supercomputing center to train AI models using driving data collected from real roads and simulation data generated in virtual environments, and in robotics, the group will use digital twin environments to train robot behavior models and advance precision control technologies. Also on Oct. 30, the group held an opening ceremony for its HMG Saemangeum Office at the Future Mobility Tech Center of the Jeonbuk Institute of Automotive Technology (JIAT) in Gunsan; the office will serve as an on-site hub with dedicated personnel supporting land-use permits, construction preparations and coordination with relevant authorities.
