What happened
On Oct. 29, Hanwha Semitech reported that its semiconductor equipment sales surged 115.2% year-on-year in the third quarter to 84.8 billion won, while companywide revenue rose 56% from a year earlier to 169.8 billion won as all business segments, including surface mount technology (SMT) and machine tools, recorded growth. SMT revenue rose 20.6% from a year earlier to 63.9 billion won, and machine tool sales increased 29.4% to 21.1 billion won over the same period. The company posted an operating profit for the second consecutive quarter: third-quarter operating profit reached 37.3 billion won, up 166.4% from 14 billion won in the previous quarter, and the operating profit margin reached 22%, up 12.5 percentage points from 9.5% in the previous quarter, which the company said reflected revenue from panel-level packaging (PLP) equipment. In the third quarter, Hanwha Semitech delivered its SFM5 Square large-area fan-out panel-level packaging (FOPLP) equipment, designed to precisely place chips on large panels, to a customer. The company expects earnings growth to continue next year, supported by expansion in the SMT, general-purpose semiconductor equipment and advanced packaging equipment markets.
